Reflecting on Light is a series of coloured pencil drawings that originally started as sketches for a site-specific work on the steps of the Sheep’s Head lighthouse in West Cork as part of The Lighthouse Project in summer 2022.

The drawings use the colours of the visible light spectrum as a reference, along with simple geometric shapes, to form pattern and construct more complex formations. The accumulation of repeated lines and shapes form wavelengths and suggest movement over time.

Keeping within the qualities of symmetry – harmony, balance and proportion – each drawing consists of parts that match each other. This means they can be scaled up and down in size infinitely and still keep their proportion.

I see the work as a quiet protest, a deliberate slowing down that embraces the reflective qualities of colouring-in, the joy of simplicity and the inherent human compulsion to create.
