Addressing issues of isolation and loneliness identified by patients within some of the GP practices in West Belfast. The group was opened to newcomers to the area and the long established local population.
We expected that participants would develop a support system which would strengthen their community connections. That would have a beneficial effect on physical and mental wellbeing.
We proposed to address these issues through the medium of the arts as part of a partnership between Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich, an organization that promotes the Irish language through arts and culture, and arts and culture through the Irish language, and 1 nation, supported by Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
It was proposed that participants in the project would engage in an artistic and linguistic cultural exchange through a series of art and print workshops facilitated by Cultúrlann’s associate artist, Emma Berkery, and Belfast print workshop.
They have focused on words that are meaningful to them in their own languages and learned how to say these in Irish. The outworking is visible to the public and visitors to Cultúrlann through the exhibition of vinyl prints and postcards of the artwork they have created.
Through this engagement, the participants have developed the vital connections and support system they desperately needed.
