A word from the artist:
“My art is focused on Irish women, femininity and Irish culture. I am currently focusing on the Magdalene Laundries and from there to the mythology of women in the Ulster cycle of Irish mythology. I’ve explored the stories of the laundries through oil portraiture, with much inspiration and guidance coming from the photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron and the paintings of Jack Butler Yeats. This subject matter is a haunting and troubling part of our Irish history and is a reflection of Irish women from the past and in mythology. One woman in Irish mythology is Deichtine, the mother of Cú Chulainn, the first Irish woman to have an abortion. Her story resonates with the women of the Magdalene laundries. I’ve portrayed her story in 3 of these paintings and plan to continue giving her and other oppressed Irish women a voice and identity.”
